This is an article from the NYTimes about how Wachovia Bank knew that some of its clients were defrauding their customers, but continued to honor their checks, because -- in the end -- they made more money that way.
What kills me about these stories is that Wachovia -- publicly -- lies and presents a peachy, 'we value our customers' image to the world -- like every other fuzzy-warm corporate PR campaign -- while the reality (as seen in the messages revealed in here) is that they barely gave those people more than a second's thought in the pursuit of $$ $$ $$.
'Scandals' like this may be commonplace, but I am fucking tired of being told one thing by the smug and 'respectable' officials of these outfits (example: Enron) and discovering the twisted truth later when outside investigators step in, with the damage already done.
In a world of deception where the bottom line is the dollar, no one will be happy.
